South Africa by Numbers

If 100 representative South Africans were to be put into a room – here is what the group would look like:

79 of us would be black

9 of us would be coloured (mixed race)

3 of us would be Indian or Asian

9 of us would be white

52 of us would be female

48 would be male

32 of us would be less than 15 years old whilst

7 of us would be older than 60.

11 of us would be living with HIV/AIDS

66 of us would have a working TV at home

73 of us would have a cellphone

64 would have a working refrigerator at home

16 of us would have a computer at home and

7 of us would have access to the internet at home

60 of us would have a flush toilet at home (this figure is higher if you live in Western Cape, Gauteng, Free State or North West)

9 of us would have no toilet at home

This information comes from The Statistics South Africa website.

In particular the 2007 Community Survey and the 2008 Mid-year Population Estimates.
